During the first semester of 2011, we exited two investments of our portfolio: Universal Spectacles and the Academy for Independent Living.
In 2010, the Right on Sight (ROS) foundation, which was established by d.o.b foundation and VU/MC, has found a partner in the UK based NGO ‘Adaptive Eyewear’ to further develop the Universal Spectacles concept (U-Specs). d.o.b foundation has provided more than € 1 million for this initiative. Adaptive Eyewear has included the U-Specs in her program ‘Vision For A Nation’, which means that the implementation of ROS’ mission will be secured. In 2010 both organizations concluded an agreement whereby Adaptive Eyeware acquires the licenses of U-specs.
On January 1st 2011, d.o.b foundation has put an end to its support of the Academy for Independent Living. Since its inception in 2007, d.o.b foundation has provided € 1 million for this initiative. The agreed upon period for support has now expired which means that the Academy has to seek for other financial sources to sustain its operations. The method has now been fully developed and the concepts are being implemented in locations in Heerlen (28 students), Tiel (42 students) and Zwolle (start up). The Academy will further develop initiatives with existing organizations working with physically or mentally challenged people.
